Some Advice My Dad Gave Me

It'd been a good 3 weeks since I played basketball at the Kyeongbuk University outdoor hoops with the guys, so I was understandably a little antsy about reassuring them that I didn't lose my shot.

And... the only way to do that is... shoot. Duh. When I was somewhat open, or if my defender wasn't guarding me tightly enough, shoot the J. Just do it.

Of course, it was not the right thing to do, because... Well, I hadn't played in 3 weeks. We lost about 2-3 games straight with me throwing up a significant number of disappointing shots that rimmed out or were not even close.

That's when I remembered my dad's words: "Don't try to steal the spotlight. Everyone's looking for their chance to shine - help them to do it."

I looked around. Standing around me were two 6ft+ guys and a really quick point guard. What was I doing taking so many shots? I should just let the game come to me and feed them the ball. So that's what I did, and it was amazing.

When I didn't know what to do with the ball, I passed it to one of my open men. As soon as they touched the ball, it seemed like a bolt of lightning was injected into their bodies, energizing their entire being. They were spinning, jumping, making smooth layups and hook-shots. I was simply on the court enjoying the show. And we demolished the other team.

"That was the confidence builder we needed," my buddy MM said. Meanwhile, I thought to myself, "Thanks dad. That was just the advice I needed."
