The Battleground of Sound

As a follow up to writing this post, I don't think that the music we listen to is necessarily revealing of the contents of the heart. On the contrary, the reason I listen to this music is because of my propensity listen to the world views carelessly spat in my direction. Does the music itself then lead to heart change? No... The only thing that can really heal the heart of all the junk and funk is the love of Jesus.

When I first began to believe in God, I realized that I had to change the music that I listen to. What do we listen to? Things that inspire us? Things that empathize with our current mood? Things that justify our actions or encourage us to adopt a specific kind of lifestyle?

Well... before I knew Jesus, I definitely was the type to inculcate phrases from my favorite hip-hop artists, like 2pac, Snoop Dogg (Mostly Deathrow Records) as if they were proverbs to guide my life. If you think about it, music is something that definitely changes your world view. We bob our heads not only because the beat is tight, but also because we are in agreement to what we listen to.

To be honest, I can't even remember many of the things that I said, nor do I feel a need to re-utter them. I don't agree with them anymore. So though I do at times want to enjoy old memories, I realize that I am different person now.

So, I pose this question to you. Who rules your sound waves? Is it of truth, or is it false?

One artist that continues to inspire me is Jaeson Ma. Just a disclaimer, his music is unapologetic, so please don't expect soothing music here...

And also, if you have time, you should check out this post on his blog that addresses spiritual warfare in the entertainment industry. Let me know if you read it and perhaps we can discuss it together.
